Author Guidelines

The Journal of Project Science publishes rigorous, evidence-based research on project delivery. Please prepare your manuscript according to the guidelines below; submissions that do not meet these requirements may be returned before review.

Article types and length

Word limits exclude the abstract, references, tables, and figure captions.

  • Empirical Research — up to 8,000 words. Original quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods studies.
  • Registered Reports — Stage 1 protocol up to 4,000 words; Stage 2 full report up to 8,000 words.
  • Replication Studies — up to 6,000 words.
  • Case & Practitioner Research — up to 7,000 words.
  • Theoretical Papers — up to 9,000 words.
  • Brief Reports — up to 3,000 words.

Structure

Empirical articles should follow IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) followed by a Conclusion, using clear headings of no more than three levels. Theoretical and case papers may use a structure appropriate to the argument.

Title page (separate file)

Provide a separate title page with the title, all authors and affiliations, ORCID iDs, the corresponding author’s email, the word count, funding sources, and acknowledgements. Do not place author-identifying information in the main manuscript.

Abstract and keywords

Include a structured abstract of no more than 250 words (Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions for empirical work) and 4 to 6 keywords.

Manuscript format

  • Microsoft Word (.docx) or LibreOffice (.odt).
  • 12-point font, double-spaced, with continuous line numbers and page numbers.
  • Anonymized for double-anonymous review (remove names, affiliations, and identifying self-citations from the main file).
  • Define all abbreviations at first use.

Figures and tables

Number figures and tables consecutively and cite each in the text with a concise caption. Tables must be editable text, not images. Figures should be at least 300 dpi (PNG, TIFF, or vector PDF/EPS). Limit display items to those necessary to support the argument, typically no more than six.

References

References follow APA 7th edition. Place in-text citations adjacent to the specific claim they support rather than aggregating them at paragraph ends, and include a DOI for every source that has one.

Data, code, and reproducibility

Include a Data Availability Statement describing where data, code, and materials can be accessed and any conditions on their use, to the extent permitted by ethical, legal, and proprietary constraints. Deposit in a recognized open repository is encouraged.

Ethics, AI, and disclosures

Include statements on ethics approval and informed consent where applicable, conflicts of interest, and funding. Disclose any use of generative AI tools, naming the tools and their purpose; generative AI cannot be listed as an author, and submissions substantially generated by AI without meaningful human authorship are rejected without review.

Fees

There are no submission fees and no article processing charges at any stage.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Empirical Research

Full reports of original quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods studies, up to 8,000 words. Manuscripts are evaluated on the importance of the research question, the rigor of the methodology, and the transparency of reporting, not on the direction of findings. All submissions undergo double-anonymous peer review.
